Resolving to Dream

“This time around I’m not kidding.”Mac Miller, Fight The Feeling

While resolutions are about “shoulds,” dreaming is about hope — and who we may become. Dreaming is at the heart of disruption— it is only when we dream that we can hope to create something truly new, something that will overtake old habits, old customs, and old ways of thinking and being.  –Whitney Johnson

Whitney suggests that resolutions are for February. Allow your mind to dream, to hope, to imagine in January. I can get with this.

In this, I may have found the root of my own angst of late. I’m not sure what my mission is right now. On the treadmill this morning, I resolved to spend 2013 undeterred. I resolved to take no day for granted. I resolved to give my best in all I do.

But to what end?

The resolutions come out of being aware of my own mortality and not wanting to waste the great privilege of being alive. But what am I hoping to accomplish with this life?

These dreams will have to be made of this.

Happy new year.
